How we work these numbers out
- Order. “Best match” puts schools where your exact word comes up first. “Most talked about” uses the share of reviews that mention it. Neither is a ranking of how good a school is.
- Comes up in X% of reviews is the share of the school's reviews that mention your search. The Brisbane average is the same share across all Brisbane schools.
- Speak well, mixed or raise concerns is worked out by software, using only the sentences about your search. It's right most of the time but not always, so read what people said.
- What students did comes from the sports and activities former students ticked in their review. We show it when at least 3 answered.
- Evidence is strong when 5 or more of at least 10 reviews mention it, some when 2 or more people do, and thin when only one person does.
- Facts such as fees, ATAR and enrolments come from each school's own documents. Fees cover different year levels at different schools, so compare carefully.
- Open Day Reflections come from our visits to 2026 open days. They're useful, but they reflect the school's own voice.

I chose these because I enjoyed writing and was interested in social issues, plus they worked well with my goal of getting into uni. I was also heavily involved in sport outside of class, which played a big role in my school life and helped with time management and discipline. I sometimes wish I’d picked Psychology instead of Biology, since I found it more relatable and easier to keep up with.

Review Year 12 subject choices
In Grade 12, I chose Physics and Engineering because of my strong interest in understanding how things work and applying scientific principles to real-world problems. These subjects provided a solid foundation for my passion for electrical work and problem-solving. Looking back, I have no regrets, as they aligned perfectly with my goals.

Yes, my school offered a wide range of subject choices, allowing students to explore diverse interests beyond the core curriculum. It encouraged curiosity by offering extracurricular activities, hands-on projects, and special interest clubs related to different fields like science, art, and technology. Teachers also emphasized critical thinking and real-world applications, making learning more engaging than just preparing for exams. These opportunities helped foster a deeper love for learning and encouraged students to pursue their passions.

My subjects were: English HL, Biology HL, Psychology HL, Maths AA SL, Chemistry SL and Japanese Ab Initio. I chose these subjects based on what I was good at and what I enjoyed. This was based off my previous grades and general interest. It also helped that the higher levels that I chose had some overlap- for example, some biology and psychology topics were the same, like neuroscience, so for me it was a good choice. However, I know some people strayed far away from that combination because biology and psychology HL were two subjects that were incredibly content-heavy and required a lot of memorisation. Ultimately, subject selection is all about playing to your strengths. If I could turn back time, I would've done AI SL instead of AA SL for maths. As a law student, I do not require a high level of maths. AA SL is more complex and difficult than AI SL but does not count as a "higher level" requirement. Therefore, as I didn't need AA SL as a prerequisite for my university degree, AI SL would probably have been a better option as it would be easier to get a good grade, which is what I needed. However, it is worth noting that unlike the current system that accepts students from Grade 7, when I arrived they only took Grade 10s, so I didn't have any chance to try out junior subjects that would have allowed me to make a more informed decision on what my subjects and higher levels should be.

QASMT wasn't the best at variety in terms of subject choices. It was very limited, and there was a strict structure for the selection process (for example, everyone had to do a language). Additionally, in my grade at least, the school removed subject options such as the Arts in Grade 11 since there were a low number of students that did it in Grade 10. Those students were then forced to pick up another subject, such as chemistry, instead. To be fair, SMT in QASMT stands for science, maths, and technology. The subjects, therefore, reflect this in offering courses mainly in these areas. There were a lot fewer creative subjects that could be found in the other QA school, QACI (creative industries). Instead, it offered subjects such as ITGS ('information technology in a global society') which would probably not be found commonly elsewhere.

Overall, these subjects were not too difficult to learn and score high marks in. Scaling for different subjects also does not exist for IB, so high marks in arts scales the same as in chemistry, which might be a plus for some students. Subject offered at SMT is quite limited.

In Grade 12, I chose Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Maths Methods, Accounting, and English. I picked these subjects because I’ve always been interested in STEM fields and wanted to keep my options open for university courses in science or business. Maths Methods and Chemistry were both challenging but rewarding, and I enjoyed the logical problem-solving involved. Accounting appealed to me because I wanted to understand how businesses operate financially and I found the most interesting and my favourite because of how applicable it is to the real world, analysing financial statements of companies to invest in..

The school offers programs like **Peer Support** and **Respectful Relationships** to foster qualities such as empathy and integrity. Teachers often integrate "life lessons" into subjects, such as discussing ethical dilemmas in Humanities. However, some students report stress during exam periods, suggesting room for enhanced mental health support

No nothing like this was present from what I knew, our school liked to follow the qcaa criteria and nothing beyond that scope. They cancelled a lot of trips that were traditional for years for our grade as we had 500 kids so I don’t think they were bothered to deal with all of us.
Review Readiness for life after school
Honestly not prepared at all. The school wasn’t helpful in preparing us beyond school as when we picked our subjects for year 11 and 12 they told us not to worry about atar but ultimately lots of kids followed this advice and picked subjects based on what they enjoyed and couldn’t score a high enough atar to get into what they wanted.

I did English, Methods, Biology, Health and Japanese. I chose these subjects because I was aiming to get a specific ATAR to do the course I wanted in Uni. Yes, there were a diverse list of subjects for students to pick from that reflected a range of interests. The only downside is that there’s only a limited amount of languages that are available to study and I wished there was more.
Review What we like and dislike
What I liked most was the convenience of the location and the variety of subjects offered. However, I disliked how the school didn’t always seem to prioritize support for struggling students, and I felt that the focus was too much on academics rather than a well-rounded experience.

Specialist Mathematics: I decided to partake in this subject because challenging myself was part of my goals, and I enjoyed math in high school and still do in university. It provides great preparation for university subjects, allowing you to have an edge over other students, but also making you someone that people are able to come to if they have questions, which allows friendships to bloom. Mathematical Methods: I took this as it was required for some also doing Specialist Mathematics. This provided foundational knowledge for the above subject, and you would usually cover the basics for Specialists a week or two before you did it there. It liked it because it allowed you to talk to people who were maybe not as academically inclined, but still wanted to put themselves out of their comfort zone. Physics: I took physics in an attempt to understand the world around me; how things moved, why things happened, what weird laws does the world follow. If I could do something again, I'd remember to NOT delete a section until I was ready to submit, it cost me a mark. Chemistry: I chose this subject because I was interested in pursuing Chemical and Process Engineering in university. It also follows the same thought process as physics, where I wanted to know why and how things happened. If I could change things about this subject, it'd be the sheer amount of memorization required for the last unit, but luckily they have updated the syllabus to make it easier. Engineering: This was a subject I chose because I thought it would lead me down the path to becoming an engineer. It certainly helped prepare me for the amount of reporting and documentation you need to do in university, and spanned subjects such as physics, chemistry, and included a lot of math. Literature: I chose to do literature because I didn't like doing persuasive speeches. I wish I could have dealt with it and go with General English instead, but I missed out on the transfer window. I guess I just was stuck with the idea that I was good at writing about stories, not writing new ones.

They also introduced students to university subjects, TAFE, VET, and certificate courses to help get a head-start for your future career. They are a great opportunity that I wish I had taken advantage of.

Physics Digital solutions Media Modern history General maths English I chose them as throughout junior school you go on a rotation of subjects for two years allowing you to experience a little of what they'd be like for senior year. During middle school you get to select your favourites apart from maths and English and science. This gives you freedom to pursue stuff that you're actually interested in. Then for senior school you select subjects again but this time including maths, science and English. I chose subjects I was interested in which also happened to be what I was good at. Personally I would not have chosen differently as throughout this process there was academic coaching helping you decide on subjects and your end goal.

I had chosen to take general maths, general english, biology, food & nutrition, general dance, and dance excellence. I had chosen these because some of them were necessary for the university course I wanted to take and others were because i was passionate about the subject. I think I chose my subjects well, I dont regret any of my choices because they were all enjoyable to some extent. My favorite subject was dance excellence because it was the easiest for me to complete and do the work in as I was passionate about dance which made it feel like more of a hobby than a subject to do.

General English I chose because it didn't seem that hard but it very much was a challenge as it's not a strong suit for me design was my fun subject where we got to draw at a more sophisticated level and learn how to tailor to customers which was very fun. Physics I chose because I found a love for it but it did turn out to be a struggle however it did help me on my engineering journey. Biology I had to choose because there was nothing else that appealed to me. My choices were mainly pushed towards mechanical engineering and they did help me get there and I dont think I would change much.

Yes, it was quite good. It was mainly the teachers that made the subjects so enjoyable. It was less about the subjects themselves and more about how they were taught. I chose Geography as a backup subject in case I did terribly in any of my main 5 subjects, but I would've picked a higher scaling subject instead if it were offered. As mentioned before, the college has invested in providing new, high-scaling senior subjects, so senior students now and in coming years will have that opportunity. I enjoyed the subjects I chose and wouldn't pick differently if I had the opportunity again. I arrived at my choices because I knew I wanted a high ATAR, and I was really good at maths and sciences.

The academic subjects were a bit limited in my senior years, and only covered the sciences and maths departments. However, my school offered plenty of diverse arts and creative subjects that many students elected to study and pursue. On top of that, my school made up for the limited academic diversity by offering plenty of opportunities and pathways to explore subjects that weren't offered, and this sparked a lot of engagement and curiosity amongst students about these pathways. There were over 75 different careers that students wanted to pursue by the time I graduated, and this was a direct result of the opportunities my school provided to explore diverse interests.

I did General English, Maths Methods, Physical Education, Accounting, Biology, Chemistry. While i enjoyed my subjects, at the time of choosing them i was unaware of how much of an impact ATAR scaling would have on my final result, so finishing grade 12 i had some regret in my subject choices, as some of my subjects did not scale well, dropping my grade.

Review Subject range and curiosity
My school offered a lot of subjects which promoted everyone to explore their own interests. Unfortunately, in senior years, at no fault of the school, most people chose subjects that would scale the best in the ATAR system, which left many of the worse scaling subjects with hardly any students, some subjects even being removed due to lack of selection.
Review Year 12 subject choices
I chose Accounting, Business, Design, Senior Art, English, Math Methods. I enjoyed all of my subjects accept design. The business and accounting class was the highlight as the teachers were so good and were very relaxed with their students which made everyone feel much more comfortable and welcomed while studying. I wish I had chosen something other than design but it wasn’t the end of the world just so boring.
Review Subject range and curiosity
Yes there were plenty of subject choices although I would’ve loved an architecture course. There were tons of club like stuff you could join in on at breaks and plenty of student and teacher run events throughout the year.
Review Getting extra help
Teachers were very accessible for help, all it would take is the student approaching any teacher they are comfortable with in the subject and asking for help, and they could arrange lunchtime or before/ after school help.
Review Would you recommend it?
I recommend this school for a strong variety of teachers ranging in various subjects. All the teachers I had were very pleasant and excellent at their jobs and helped me achieve my goals. The sense of community is also very good around the school. There is a problem with students who are consistently acting up without many repercussions.
Review Chances to take part in the arts
There were plenty of art subjects to choose from and they recently built an arts all where they do visual art, drama and music which is very modern and has all the recourses needed.

Brisbane Bayside State College offered a large diversity of subject choices, such as psychology, agriculture, design, art, and more. These classes always have students signing up for them, and a large positive response was received via a more diverse subject selection.

The school met my academic expectations. There were talks about the new school should be similar standard as Brisbane State high but I never expect it to be, since its students are mostly from the catchment. Only small proportion of students are through the selective entry program.
