    Questions parents ask

When should I apply for Year 7 at a Brisbane private school?

It depends on the school. 11 of the schools in this guide close Year 7 applications by the time your child is in Year 4, several schools offer places in order of application from birth, and others interview one to three years ahead. Use the timeline above to see each school's rule for your child.

Does applying early guarantee a place?

Not always. At date-order schools an early application usually puts you near the front, but some, such as Brisbane Grammar School, review a waiting list that is not ranked by date. At closing-date schools what matters is getting in before the close; after that you join a waitlist.

What if we have missed the closing date?

Apply anyway and ask about the waitlist. Places come up as families move or change their minds, sometimes as late as the January before the school year starts.

How do state high schools work?

If you live in a state high school's catchment, your child is guaranteed a place and can enrol any time. Families outside the catchment, and students applying for Programs of Excellence or selective academies such as QASMT, apply in set windows, usually in Year 5 or 6.

    Are application fees refundable?

Usually not. Most private schools charge a non-refundable application fee, often $100 to $650, when you apply. Each school's fee is listed below where it publishes one.

    How we put this together

We read each school's own enrolment pages, policies and newsletters in full, last on 19 October 2026, and copied the rules and dates as the school wrote them. We don't use search results or second-hand lists. Where a school gives a rule rather than a date, the timeline works out which year that rule falls in for your child and shows it next to the school's words. Schools change their processes, so confirm with the school before you rely on a date. Spotted something out of date? Email hello@schoolinsights.com.au with a link.

Once the dates are sorted, read how each school felt to families.
