What’s something unique or unexpected about BGS that only students would know?

Brisbane grammar school has the only double-deckered toilet block in the southern hemisphere, I believe.

🏫 Culture & Student Life

What stands out in your memory that reflects BGS’s culture or spirit?

The school has a long long history hence a more traditional approach, especially in keeping with traditions, such as important assemblies and symbolic ceremonies. However, classroom teaching and learning is still very flexible and catering to different students’ methods of learning.

📚 Subject Variety

How well did BGS offer choice and support curiosity beyond exam results?

BGS offers many general subjects but fewer “applied” subjects as the school believes in a “broader liberal education”. They do not want to limit us to very niche and specific topics, e.g. legal studies, as it may be a waste of time if students end up choosing a different path in uni or realise that it is not what they want to do, which then limits their existing knowledge or may exclude them from eligibility of other degrees due to prerequisites.

What subjects did you take in Year 12, and which did you enjoy or regret?

English, Methods, Specialist, Chemistry, Physics, Latin; I chose most of them because I wanted to pursue a more science oriented career in the future and I chose Latin as a second language as it is unique.

The surrounding roads at the front and front-sides of the school can be busy, but the school has good protection/security for students and staff.

Yes, parents tend to know each other and keep in contact, as there is an Old Boys Network and a large proportion of parents are Old Boys (previous graduates).

The school engages with parents well, and normally responds to all queries and complaints from what I have heard. Possibly, having more contactable people could be an improvement.

The school integrates technology into the classroom well, providing each student and teacher with 2-in-1 laptops with writing styluses, and subscriptions to all of Microsoft Office’s applications. Communication with parents is frequently given through email.
